About The Tides Wharf & Restaurant

Nestled along the scenic shores of Bodega Bay, California, The Tides Wharf & Restaurant stands as a beloved landmark for locals and visitors alike, offering a quintessential Northern California coastal experience. Located at 835 Bay Hwy, Bodega Bay, CA 94923, this iconic establishment is more than just a restaurant—it’s a vibrant hub where the freshest seafood, breathtaking bay views, and a touch of Hollywood history come together to create unforgettable memories.

The Tides Wharf & Restaurant has deep roots in the community, tracing its origins back to the 1920s when the first seafood restaurant on the Sonoma Coast was built on this very site[3]. Over the decades, it has evolved into a multifaceted destination, seamlessly blending dining, shopping, and maritime activities. The casual, welcoming atmosphere is immediately apparent as you step inside, greeted by expansive windows that frame panoramic views of Bodega Bay. Whether you’re savoring a leisurely lunch, enjoying a sunset dinner, or simply stopping by for a quick snack, the ever-changing vista of boats, seabirds, and rolling waves provides a serene backdrop to every visit.

At its heart, The Tides is a seafood restaurant renowned for its commitment to freshness and quality. The menu showcases the bounty of the Pacific, featuring locally caught fish, Dungeness crab, clam chowder, and other coastal classics prepared with care and creativity. The open kitchen allows guests to watch as chefs transform the day’s catch into delectable dishes, ensuring that every meal is as fresh as it is flavorful. Complementing the seafood offerings is a well-curated bar, where craft cocktails, local wines, and regional beers are served alongside small plates and shareable appetizers—perfect for pairing with the salty ocean breeze.

Beyond the dining room, The Tides Wharf & Restaurant offers a unique array of amenities that set it apart from typical waterfront eateries. The on-site seafood market is a destination in itself, offering customers the chance to take home the same premium fish and shellfish served in the restaurant. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a curious foodie, the market’s selection—from whole salmon to live crabs—makes it easy to bring a taste of the coast to your own kitchen. Adjacent to the market, the gift shop brims with coastal-inspired souvenirs, local artisan goods, and memorabilia celebrating the restaurant’s storied past.

For those seeking a more casual bite, the snack bar provides quick, satisfying options like fish and chips, clam strips, and soft-serve ice cream—ideal for enjoying on the go or while strolling along the adjacent fishing pier. The pier itself is a focal point of the property, offering anglers a prime spot to cast a line and visitors a peaceful place to take in the sights and sounds of the bay. It’s not uncommon to see families fishing side by side, seabirds circling overhead, and the occasional sea lion popping up to say hello.

The Tides Wharf & Restaurant is also steeped in cinematic history, having played a starring role in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller, “The Birds.” In the early 1960s, owner Mitch Zankich agreed to let Hitchcock film at the restaurant on the condition that the fictional town in the movie be named “Bodega Bay,” the male lead be called “Mitch,” and Zankich himself receive a speaking part[2][4]. To this day, film enthusiasts from around the world visit Bodega Bay to see the locations featured in the movie, and The Tides remains a must-see stop on any Hitchcock fan’s itinerary. The restaurant’s gift shop even preserves a replica of its original facade, offering a tangible connection to its Hollywood moment[4].

Despite changes over the years—including a fire in the late 1960s that destroyed some of the original structures—The Tides has endured, expanding and remodeling to meet the needs of its guests while retaining its classic charm[1][2]. The staff’s warm hospitality and deep knowledge of the area’s history and cuisine ensure that every visit feels personal and memorable. Whether you’re a first-time guest or a regular, you’ll find that The Tides Wharf & Restaurant is more than a place to eat—it’s a place to connect with the spirit of the Sonoma Coast.

Good food and service with a nice view of Bodega Bay. Nothing here was amazing and prices leaned toward the high side but limited options in the area especially later into the evening forced our visit here. Would visit again though.

I had a great experience at The Tides Restaurant. The seafood was fresh and well-seasoned, with clean, bright flavors and thoughtful presentation and the NYsteak was perfectly cooked and peppered just right. Service was attentive, informed, and efficient without hovering. The room has an easy coastal feel comfortable, polished, and relaxed which made the whole meal flow nicely. Overall, a memorable spot highly recommend.

6/6/26 - Went to The Tides Wharf & Restaurant to place a take out order. The staff and the manager were very friendly and helpful. The prawns scampy had a tomato sauce but I changed it to a flavorful alfred sauce, the dish was delicious andhad and big prawns. This dish would be better if the prawn tails were removed before making the dish. My husband had the clam chowder bread bowl. He said, it was a good size bowl; chowder was thick, creamy, and tasty. He also had the Bodega Bay burger with cheddar cheese,It was cooked perfection with crispy fries. (He ate the cheeseburger before I could take a picture of it) they also have a bakery there with cookies and other baked. Items. We will definitely be back!

Upscale feels and the prices refect the same. Definitely good food. But your paying for the views. The service here was friendly, but for such a slow night we were suprised that it was hard to get a servers attention. For the prices on the menu we have definitely had more attentive service at lower end restaurants. Don't get me wrong. The restaurant is kind of old school vibes with amazing views. The food we had was tasty. Did it blow us away enough to make a return trip. Probably not. The prices are quite high for a run of the mill kind of menu. The seafood very fresh. We enjoyed what we had.

Topic: The Tides Date: 4/19/26 Quality: 6/10 Value: 7/10 Service: 8/10 Timeliness: 5/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 Total: 33/50 Came in for our final meal from our trip here this weekend, and it was fairly good. The service was also good, but this restaurant excels most in its location. What an outstanding view of the bay! One of our waters did have a weird cloudy substance on the top so we did not keep drinking it.. we’re curious what that was! The food took about twice as long as we expected for a quick breakfast, maybe 25 minutes? Traditional Eggs Benedict (Country Potatoes): 5.5/10 Very very basic, the hollandaise tasted a little funky Tides Breakfast (Classic Breakfast, Bacon, Eggs (Medium), Country Potatoes, Sourdough Toast): 9/10 Everything here was great! I wish they had a higher quality jam to offer than smuckers when there is so much good, local jam in the area already.
